6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route)

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola Route – the most classic and comfortable trekking route to the summit of Africa’s highest peak, Uhuru Peak (5895m). This 6-day Kilimanjaro trekking package offered by Impala Explorer, a trusted Tanzania trekking operator, is designed for first-time climbers seeking a guided Kilimanjaro tour with better acclimatization and higher summit success.

Unlike other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu Route offers permanent huts instead of tents, making it ideal for climbers who prefer a bit more comfort. You’ll hike through stunning landscapes – rainforest, moorland, alpine desert – and enjoy views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The 64 km (40 miles) journey ensures optimal altitude adjustment, resulting in a 92% summit success rate on this longer itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Moshi Town

Your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure begins with a warm welcome at the airport by Impala Explorer’s representative. You’ll be transferred to a comfortable hotel in Moshi, the base town for most Kilimanjaro trekkers. After check-in, a detailed briefing and gear check will be conducted by your certified Kilimanjaro mountain guide. Enjoy your evening at leisure before the climb begins.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1980m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 8 km | Habitat: Rainforest
After an early breakfast, Impala Explorer will transfer you to Marangu Gate, where registration with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) takes place. Trek through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest, home to blue monkeys and Colobus monkeys, toward Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Dinner and overnight in comfortable mountain huts.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 12 km | Habitat: Moorland
Leave the rainforest and enter the beautiful heather and moorland zone, with panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak. You’ll pass the Maundi Crater, a scenic viewpoint, and encounter giant groundsel and lobelia plants along the way. Arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and rest. Temperatures may fall below freezing.

Day 4: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut (3720m)

This extra day for acclimatization increases your chance of reaching the summit. Take a short hike to Mawenzi Ridge (4600m) with your Impala Explorer guide, or relax at the camp. All meals provided at the hut. This day is critical in your safe and successful Kilimanjaro summit attempt.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Hiking Time: 6 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert Trek across the Saddle, the dry expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Choose between the upper and lower routes—your guide from Impala Explorer will recommend the best one based on your acclimatization. At Kibo Hut, enjoy an early dinner and rest for the night. Prepare for your summit push at midnight.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Descend to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours to summit, 7–8 hours descent | Distance: 20 km
Wake around 23:30 for tea and snacks before beginning your summit attempt under the stars. Trek to Hans Meyer Cave (5150m) and Gillman’s Point (5681m). From there, hike along the snow-covered crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Take in the breathtaking sunrise and celebrate your success with photos. Descend to Kibo Hut for lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and well-deserved rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1980m) – Transfer to Moshi

Enjoy a final breakfast on the mountain. Participate in a lively farewell celebration with your porters and guides – singing, dancing, and tipping. After signing the register at Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate – green for Gillman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. Return to Moshi with Impala Explorer for a refreshing shower and celebration at the hotel.

Day 8: Departure – End of Kilimanjaro Trekking Tour

After breakfast, Impala Explorer will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your outbound flight, marking the end of your guided Kilimanjaro expedition.
