7 Days Lemosho Route – Kilimanjaro Trekking with Impala Explorer

Embark on an unforgettable Kilimanjaro trekking adventure with Impala Explorer via the Lemosho Route 7 Days, one of the most scenic and rewarding routes to the Roof of Africa. Famous for its breathtaking landscapes, gradual acclimatization profile, and high summit success rates (up to 90% for the 7-day climb), the Lemosho Route offers the perfect balance of beauty and challenge.

Your journey begins in the lush rainforest, continues through heather moorlands and alpine deserts, and culminates in the arctic landscapes of Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Covering a total distance of about 46 km (28.5 miles), this route provides varied terrain and spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers.

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Moshi

safari

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our Impala Explorer driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After checking in, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing and gear check. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the hotel, enjoying the pool, or exploring the friendly town of Moshi. Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Day 2: Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) – Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

safari

After breakfast, we drive to Londorossi Gate (about 3–4 hours). Here, park formalities are completed while porters organize and weigh gear. Your Lemosho Route adventure officially begins as you trek through lush rainforest teeming with wildlife — watch for Colobus monkeys and exotic bird species. After about 3–4 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp where tents and warm meals await.
Hiking distance: ~7 km / 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping at Mti Mkubwa

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa (2,750m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

safari

Leaving the rainforest, the trail ascends into the heather and moorland zone. You’ll cross gentle ridges and expansive plateaus with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Tonight’s camp, Shira 2, sits beside a stream and offers spectacular vistas of the Western Breach glaciers. Prepare for colder temperatures as the altitude increases.
Hiking distance: ~16 km / 7–8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping at Shira 2

Day 4: Shira 2 (3,840m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

safari

This is a key acclimatization day. You’ll trek from the moorland into the alpine desert to reach the towering Lava Tower (4,630m), where you’ll enjoy a packed lunch. If conditions allow, you may climb the Lava Tower for panoramic views. Afterward, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, set in a valley below the imposing Great Barranco Wall. The drop in altitude from Lava Tower to Barranco helps your body adapt to high elevations.
Hiking distance: ~10 km / 6–8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping at Barranco Camp

Day 5: Barranco (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (3,950m)

safari

After breakfast, tackle the Great Barranco Wall — a thrilling scramble that rewards you with breathtaking views of Heim Glacier. The trail then meanders through the alpine desert and into the Karanga Valley before reaching Karanga Camp. This shorter day is excellent for acclimatization, giving you more time to rest and prepare for the summit push.
Hiking distance: ~5 km / 4–5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping at Karanga Camp

Day 6: Karanga (3,950m) to Barafu Camp (4,600m)

safari

Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, your final base before summit night. Located on a rocky ridge with sweeping views, Barafu means “ice” in Swahili — and you’ll feel the chill. An early dinner is served before you rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt. Your guide will brief you on clothing, gear, and the mental preparation needed for summit night.
Hiking distance: ~4 km / 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping at Barafu Camp

Day 7: Summit Attempt – Barafu (4,600m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

You’ll wake around 11:30 PM for tea and biscuits before starting the steep climb to Stella Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue along the snow-dusted trail to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu for a quick rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through changing landscapes from alpine desert to lush rainforest. Hiking distance: ~17 km / 12–15 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Camping at Mweka Camp

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,980m) – Transfer to Moshi

After breakfast, enjoy a lively celebration with your crew — complete with singing and dancing — before descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll sign out with the park authorities and receive your summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point). You’ll then be driven back to Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and a well-earned celebration.
Hiking distance: ~10 km / 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi
